A view through the park, one of many park areas in Universal Studios. In the in the background you can se the front of the R.H. Macy building. Just a fake storefron, but it added to the overall atmosphere.
Here you can see Charlie Chaplin riding his bicycle around Ecto-1 from Ghostbusters. These two were part of a procession of vehicles and doubles that was making its way through the park.
Stan Laurel and Ollie Hardy passing by in their car.... and yes, that is still Charlie Chaplin on his bike.
The Men in Black are out on patrol, protecting all the humans in the park from the ever present alien invaders.
Scooby-Doo and Shaggy cruise around in The Mystery Machine.
One of the streets in the park, made up to look like an old fashioned N.Y.C. street, classic cab and all. This is between Twister: Aftermath and Kongfragration.
Another portion of the N.Y.C. mockup.
Now we're moving into the California set.... with the main attraction.... EARTHQUAKE!
Inside the Earthquake attraction, first we saw a brief film showing how they made some of the special effects. Then the curtain rises to reveal a portion of the model used to create them, this is that model.
Here we are in the main portion of the ride. You're on a subway car that gets stuck in a station during the quake. Here you see a truck that slides down from the road above as the ceiling collapses from the quake. As it hits that pillar, it explodes.
Flames erupt from gaslines, the tanker truck, and buildings. The subway car (with open sides for some reason) shakes on its tracks from the quake. Light flash everywhere, sparks fly. Pretty good effects!
For the grand finale, a flood of water comes toward you down the steps of the station. It's an awful lot of water that continues for quite a while, you get splashed a little bit, but it is quite a sight!.
Warning: you are now entering Amity, beware of Sharks! This whole section of the park is themed to provide atmosphere for the JAWS! feature. There you take a boat tour as a great white shark attacks! Your tour guide does his best to protect you, but I hear they don't always succeed!
Some expeditions are obviously successful. Here is proof of that. Smile! No, not you silly, the shark!
Just beyond Amity, we find the MIB (Men in Black) ride. Here you can see most of the building it is housed in.
On the way from Amity to MIB, we stopped in at the Kennedy Space Center. Ok, maybe not, but the picture isn't a bad illusion, is it? They had a model space shuttle that would look like it was ready for launch from the building behind Michelle. In actuality, the model is rather small and closer to the camera than Michelle.
Here we're inside MIB headquarters. And where else would the worms be but in the break room drinking coffee?
Another shot of the worms in the break room. They were actual animatronic figures that had a ton of phrases they would spew out.
A good view of the MIB control room. Both of these areas were just to keep you entertained while in line. The ride itself was a drive through arcade game. You got in a car (six people per car) and drove around (on a track) shooting aliens with a laser. You even get a score in the end! Michelle was kicking butt! :-)
Outside of the Back to the Future ride they had the time travelling train from the second/third movies on display.
Just a sign, but I wanted to show all of the time that went into details. Even these signs were themed to fit into the attractions.
Ah yes, the Marx Brothers enjoying an nice relaxing game of golf through one of the garden areas..... using a softball?!?
Just a shot of the building that houses the horror makeup show.
Mel's Drive-In from American Grafitti. One of the many places to eat in the park.
The entrance to Cyberdyne Systems/T2:3D feature. Go ahead in for a tour. Cyberdyne Systems: We are the future!
Again, they theme the entire ride. This is just the entrance to the waiting lines. This, like many other rides has multiple parts to it. First a video presentation, then what begins as a product display showcasing the first prototype Terminators. Of course, the demo doesn't come off quite as planned, with an interruption by Sarah Conner and her son, as well as interference from the Terminator himself and the morphing terminator from T2.
Here your hostess introduces the video. She was ultra-perky. And ultra-annoying. One of the audience members accused her of being insane, to which she promptly replied, "And who decided to visit an amusement park in Florida on a sunny day in July?"
The video showcased many Cyberdyne innovations, including SkyNet, a global sattelite and computer system that will take the responsibility for mankinds weapons out of the hands of error prone humans. Making the world a safer place?
The video ended with the ominous glare from a prototypr Terminator, which they were more than happy to show us in operation if we would just step into the next room and put on our "safety glasses" (3D glasses).
