Shawn & Michelle: Cancun 2002: Tulum
Tulum: The only Mayan city found directly on the coast. Here is your first impression of it as you approach. You can't tell from here, but the city is perched on a cliff overlooking the Caribbean. Without a doubt the most picturesque set of ruins we visited.
Here's a closer view. Tulum is still actually an active archaeolgical site, being restored stone by stone.
One of the building at Tulum.
The largest building at Tulum. The man in the front of the pictire was our guide for this tour.
Another shot of the centerpiece of Tulum, again with our guide in the front.
One of the most picturesque scenes you'll find around Cancun. Notice where the waves are breaking off of the coast. That is where the coral reef is located.
A shot of the coastline to the south of Tulum. The cliffs running along the shore make for some beautiful scenery.
Us taking advantage of one of the other tourists. Our feet were lost in a horrible composing accident.
Another scenic shot, this one northward along the coast, towards Cancun which you can see off in the distance.
Here I am climbing around on the cliffs. I was looking for somewhere to have an interesting photo taken. Now I just wish I could be back there so I could dive in that incredible water!
Michelle's turn to play on the cliffs. We're building a house there to retire in.
LOOK! I found a hole! Take the picture, take the picture! These rocks are sharp!
The main road of Tulum. Future site of Starbucks is just ahead on the right.
I believe that iguanas are the rabbits of Mexico. They are everywhere. This one is rather small compared to some examples we saw on thetrip.
Here's a closeup of some of the carvings on the smaller building pictured above. Notic the face that wraps around the corner of the building? Carved by my great-great grandfather! Yeah, right.
Take a close look at the left handprint. Yes it has extra fingers. Supposedly unusual deformities like this were looked at as gifts from the gods in the Mayan culture and such people were often made priests.
