Shawn & Michelle: Cancun 2002: Moon Palace
Just me playing at being artistic. Wanted to try and get an interesting shot of this palm tree, I don't think it came out half bad. Anyway, these were all around the resort. Definiteley added to the ambiance.
Here's a shot taken from the beach at our resort, looking northward towards Cancun's Hotel Zone. We were quite a distance from all of the nightlife, but it was an easy shuttle ride away, with shuttles provided by the resort several times a day.
Looking the other direction down the shore. Notice that the ocean is very calm here. That's because the resort is located to the south of Cancun, beyond the point where the coral reef begins offshore. All of the waves break on the reef before they ever reach the shore, providing a very calm surf here. Unfortunately it also means that seaweed grows and gathers along the shore.
A sample of some of the artistic sculptures hanging around the resort. Teh resort was exquisitely decorated with marble floors, stained glass ceiling, beautiful pools and rooms, and much interesting artwork like this.
This is what happened when Michellee angered a local priest. Luckily we were able to get her restored to full size later that night, but she still wasn't in the best mood (as would be expected). I tried to get her to smile, really I did!
This is a Dia de los Muertes (Day of the Dead) display. We visited Cancun over this holiday, celebrated the same time as our Halloween. Here though, they honor those who have died withing the past year. Supposedly all of those spirits will return for one last visit on this day.
A gorgeous view from the rooftop of one of the buildings in the resort. Just imagine relaxing at the pool in amongst those trees, overlooking the beautiful Caribbean Sea. Never mind, just imagine us doing that. We did. Nyah!
We carve pumpkins for Halloween, they carve ummm, whatever this is for Dia de los Muertes. You can also see that they leave plenty of snack and gifts for their departed friends and family.
Getting ready to go out on our excursion to Tulum, we took advantage of one of the conceirge staff to have our picture taken together.
At dinner in a Mexican restaurant (no, really, this one specialized in Mexican food as opposed to others at the resort that were Italian, Spanish, etc) we took advantage of a waiter to have our photo taken. Just a few minutes prior to this he had made the balloon sculpture for us as well.
Here's a map of the Moon Palace Resort where we stayed. It had two seperate sections, Sunrise and Punta Nizuc, each with its own lobby that held the main restaurants and gift shops. We were staying in the Punta Nizuc section.
This was one of the friends we made on the trip. Several cats could be found wandering around the resort. They's often beg for food at the open air restaurants.... quite successfully. This little lady actually made herself at home under our bed in our room for a few minutes when we left the door open one night!
Here's another of the unregistered guests at the resort. Many of the cats were very friendly and would let you pet and play with them. They didn't always get along so well with each other though when they would vie for yor attention.
This is our room. Behind me that you can't see is our closet and bathroom (with a large shower in addition to the tub seen in this picture). We loved this room, the tub was a whirlpool tub made for two. We used it several times to relax with the balcony door open for a romatic sea breeze.
A view from our balcony. This shows weather that was typical for our trip. Beautiful skies, nice warm temps kept more than bearable by the sea breeze coming off of the Caribbean.
Another view from our balcony. The dock is where we could go for Jet Skis, Sailboats, and quite a few other aquatic activities.
